The magnitude of socio-economic problem in our country is enormous. According to UNDP's largest Human Development Report, 799 million Indians are still below the poverty line and a great percentage of them lives in the slums. HIV & AIDS, cancer, blindness, mental & physical disability, unemployment, underemployment, marginalization, orphan children, slum, poverty, population, corruption and communal disturbances are only few of the long list of growing urban phenomenon from which our country is suffering from. A professional and concerted approach is necessary for a change in the current and future situation. Unfortunately the number of people working in the field of Social Development is not enough to help to improving the prevailing situation. People seek the safety of silence or tie themselves up in the knots when they choose to take stand. Some show inability, some show apathy and others really do not think it is as priority in their life Concert commitment and collaborative efforts are required to stimulate and strengthen the already existing feeling in the mind of the citizens. The solution behind the problem is to development of a team of volunteers that believe in the human potential evolution. A group of people that will act directly and that will further replicate desirable models of such kind. Food, shelter, health, education, clothing and recreation are surely the six basic needs of human beings that have to be primarily satisfied, however the mentality of the people does not change, the situation will remain as it is. Even if they are provided with the aforementioned values they will never be able to take advantage of their potentials and to escape from the micro-reality that are trapped. People are unaware of the different reality and they confirmed to the existing one. They are not provided by the options and neither do they search for them. They are not allowed to dream and surely not motivated to do so. Lack of self confidence and information do not allow any kind of development. So,
two more vital needs can be identified: exposure and opportunities, as
crucial variable in the equation of providence development. Exposure to
available information, to options, to different realities and to choices.
Opportunities to take the advantage the information provided and to allow
empowerment process. |
